Four cardinal virtues of Stoicism

What is Stoicism and what are Stoicism beliefs

Stoicism is an ancient Greek and Rome philosophy that is of high importance in this present era. It is a philosophy that believes in personal ethics and a methodology of seeking wisdom in life. It talks about the principle of dichotomy that urges us to redirect all our energy and time towards changing what we actually are capable of changing. This, alongside the four cardinal virtues of Stoicism, can help equip us to display resilience in times of adversity.

The most renowned Stoic philosopher was Marcus Aurelius of Rome his one of the famous quote says-

“If it is not right, do not do it, if it is not true, do not say it.”

Now let’s talk about the Four cardinal virtues of Stoicism/ What are Stoicism beliefs

The four cardinal values or what are Stoicism beliefs are the same. They are Courage, Temperance, Justice, and Wisdom.
Courage: It is known and determined in one, when they face adversity in life, how one tackles those difficult times, and how he holds them as well as others in that tough situation.
You should show the right amount of courage when needed.

Temperance: In simple words, it can be defined as self-control.
Temperance

SLAVE <——————Control Over Our Emotions————————> MASTER

Temperance is a major Athenian virtue, as advocated by Plato.
Like all the virtues, temperance must be learned through practice and patience. While it may not sound like much fun, the only real way to become temperate is through prayer and self-denial. In other words, you have to tell yourself no now and then. And it is important to say No to yourself sometimes, it helps you in setting your limits, from the pleasures of life. So basically Temperance teaches balance in life.

Justice: is doing the right thing. “Justice is the source of all the other virtues. Standing for the right and raising a voice against injustice is what required. Don’t tolerate injustice and neither support it. Live your life with all the rights provided to you and if you feel that fighting for someone’s right will get them justice, you should support them.

Wisdom
: It involves grasping what is good and bad, and understanding what is most important. Once one understood what good is, one can act accordingly. It overlaps with the idea of acting in accordance with nature.

In the end

The practice of Stoic Principles is to take the bird-eye view of things, to realize how small we are in comparison to everything else. It implies, also, to view oneself from ‘above’, disassociating ourselves from our emotions for a while, and going on about a task rationally.

Without being partial what will you feel for others is what it teaches, how will you react in a certain situation, and if the other person does it same you have no right to question their doing instead empathize with them with your true feelings.
Generally, Stoicism shouldn’t be viewed as a one-time thing, but rather a practical philosophy that you can practice every day, especially during times of difficulty. It come s with practice and developing control over your negative emotions.
