Who is the most generous lender? Your Future.
Who is the most egregious borrower? You.
We make promises to ourselves in which we need to do something expeditious in the present which we will compensate for by doing the right thing in the future.
In this transaction between your present-self and your future-self, you will be the arbiter in the future. And being a generous soul you are, you will NEVER reprimand your present-self severely enough. At max, you may ask him to go on a short guilt-trip which can be soothed later with some fun activity anyway.
What if you could borrow from a bank forever and returning the money is still a choice. When it is the time to return, you could rather again borrow from the bank. Well, the analogy seems fantastic. But there is a caveat. Whenever you borrow from this bank, it restricts your access to a much bigger bank with a locker under your name which has an unspecified surprise for you.
Unfortunately, while we enjoy the reward we promised ourselves in the present, we don’t undertake the compensatory action in future, unless circumstances force us to. And then we want to take credit of taking those actions that were actually forces upon us. Actions taken out of Helplessness are not Choices. They are called escapes.
How much would you borrow now?
