Leadership Mantra: Bring clarity to the table. And then get out of the way.
In 4th class, I wanted a carrom board. My parents told me that they would buy it for me if I topped in all 4 sections. I topped my section but came 2nd in all 4 sections combined. The carrom had to wait for another year when I topped all sections in the 5th class.
I felt triumphant that day. From school, my mother and I went straight to the sports goods shop. No cost restrictions were placed on what kind of carrom or board coins I could choose. I got what I wanted and we additionally bought Samosas +Rasgullas for celebrating the day with family at home too. I can still recall many scenes of the day in vivid detail.
In initial schooling days for me and my siblings, I remember, major items always came with a deal related to our education e.g. 100% marks in Maths in so-and-so test/exam and you can have XYZ. And if we couldn’t keep our end of the bargain, we accepted why we didn’t get it. No tantrums. That it said Leadership.
That was our Appraisal+R&R system back then. Clear objectives. Clear rewards. Clear timelines. And it worked.
Our parents never had to ask us when to study or play. We planned our own schedules with no coercion.
