Per Hindu mythology, Baali had defeated Raavan and kept him under his armpit for 6 months. Baali also had the boon that he will receive half the strength of his opponent in any fight – this boon was so powerful that even Lord Ram had to hide behind trees to kill Baali when Baali was fighting Sugriv.
Now, imagine if Lord Ram had befriended Baali and not Sugriv. One real possibility is that just knowing that Baali is assisting Lord Ram may have prompted Raavan to return Sita and the whole war could have been avoided.
