How to tackle a large complex task

There are some tasks that are so complex or large that we don’t even start working on them. Unfortunately, most of the time, these are the tasks of real value. These are the needle movers and completion of them is not an option, it is a necessity.  If we delay them long enough, they will have negative effects on our professional or personal life.

So, how do we handle them? Some people advise the “Just Do It” solution. If just do it was possible, it would be in progress already. Here is a different approach. If the scale of the task is what terrifies you, start with some other task(s) that you can finish fast. Once you’ve finished the smaller task, take that momentum to the complex task. You will start making progress.

Starting is the hardest part. Once you have started, you will realize that the complexity or size isn’t that much a problem. You keep biting at the elephant and soon you would have devoured the whole of it. Just looking at the elephant is not going to make it disappear.

So, let’s say you have to go 2 miles to fetch milk in the morning. You are not in the mood to go out. In this case, fool your mind to get out of the couch and keep the car keys in your pocket. Put on your shoes and go out for some other reason – get the mobile charger out of the car, dispose of the garbage, or anything. Now, once you’re outside with car keys with you, higher chances are that your inner self will propel you to go out and buy the milk, assuming buying milk is an absolute necessity for you.

What worked here? You got yourself in momentum by finishing some other smaller task and then carried that momentum for the larger and more complex task.
