The United Nations defines violence against women as “any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual, or mental harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life.”
The two most prevalent violence which occurs to women is sexual violence and intimate violence done by their partners and in country like India also by their in-laws generally due to Dowry demands.
Bodies such as UNESCO runs Orange the world campaign as, International day or removal of violence against women is program held by the UN from 25 November celebrated as Orange the world till December 10 that is Human Rights Day to unite people of whole world to spread awareness and train women in such ways to battle this unjust done to them. In 2018 the official theme was Orange the world #HearMeToo and 2019 it was “Orange the world: Generation Equality Stands Against Rape”.
This year’s theme UNiTE by 2030 to end violence against women is marking 16 days of activism to end gender biased violence under the global theme “orange the world: FUND, RESPOND, PREVENT, COLLECT.
As the countries implemented lockdown to prevent coronavirus cases rise in domestic violence occurred. Also, the School closures and economic strains left women and girls in pathetic situations as by this they became more vulnerable to exploitation, trafficking, abuse, and marriages.
Where In India Where sexual violence is prevalent and according to the latest data by Sexual the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), India recorded nearly 88 cases per day. The capital city Delhi, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh are unsafe states or women.
Also, the numbers of cases that are reported are just the tip of the icebergs. Not every case is filed as families prefer to remain silent due to social stigma against such brutal crimes. It is seen that the victim is generally held responsible for aspersions to be cast on her character.
It is been reported that after the mass outrage of people after the Delhi 2012 rape case this sexual harassment came into the eye of the public. But do you all know even then these types of violence against women have increased? Although the amendment brought to criminal law in 2013 was thought to enact stronger punishments still these crimes have emerged at a much faster rate.
It clearly shows that these people fear it not. And why there is no ear in them should be thought o because even after these many years of independence and being modern women of 21st century we women are not free. We risk our lives every single second due to these unwanted radicals.
In fact, the number of reported rape cases has increased by 31 percent over the past 10 years.
India’s criminal justice system is predominantly male, misogynistic. The chances of a woman securing justice in these circumstances are rare. Policemen have views that are shockingly misogynistic; because they feel women are responsible for unjust done to them.
Violence against women creates a sense of insecurity and fear in the community. The complex issue can be tackled by providing comprehensive care pro-actively. A multi-dimensional and multi-agency team including access to psychosocial support is to be made available to deliver holistic care under one roof in a district hospital setting. Also implementing primary prevention programs such as life skills training gender sensitization and sex education in all schools and colleges. And most importantly our families need to din into boys and men that aggression is not masculinity and being macho is not “cool.” It is only by tackling misogynistic mindsets among men and women and dismantling the patriarchal aspects of the sanskar rule in our society Since the real problem is being neglected in name of Sanskar. We hope these world organizations along with the government to bring change in our society and make it easier for women to stand equally without fear.
One Life. Live Boundless.
