Declutter your thoughts this Diwali

Diwali time is well known for the time for shopping and cleaning. Depending on one’s financial condition, people go to the market to purchase new things and discard the old items from their houses. It is time to decorate our homes. People put in their best efforts to accomplish such a brightening work. Some people do heavy shopping during this time to mark up their status in society. It is also the time to Declutter your thoughts.

Ask yourself a question – “Only materialism during festivities gives you happiness?”

We are so carried away with the trends of buying stuff just to show our lavish lifestyle. Though we have defined Diwali to be a festival of shopping and cleaning. So after shopping, we jump into cleaning and start decluttering. I start with the kitchen, then my closet, puja room, bookshelves, and all. This has been a tradition in our families which we follow and I appreciate it. But don’t we realize sometimes that only shopping and decluttering our houses during Diwali is what needed? If we are given the option of decluttering just one space during Diwali, I think it should definitely be our minds.  if our mind and soul are wealthy and clear, our life will be too.

Lets declutter our lives this Diwali a different way.

Clean up your closet: When you jump on cleaning your shelves you find items and clothes which you bought out of just the habit of emotional buying or in the race of keeping up with the trend. This Diwali asks yourself do you really need these piles of clothes stacked up in your wardrobe. De-clutter the wardrobe. Keep only the essential, give away the rest. Try inculcating this bare minimum approach in materialism consumption.

Clean up your social media: In today’s generation keeping up with junk, trends have become an obsession. We all agree to it that it does harm to our mental health as we want to match up with our peers. If they go on holiday we too would want to copy the same just out of jealousy and comparison. Declutter your thoughts of unhealthy competition with your peers and put off those jealous thoughts.

Shop wisely and consciously: Emotional buying is what we girls generally do through these online platforms. We tend to spend much that we save in order to make ourselves happy.  It has been quoted that “anyone placing great value on wealth, status and material possessions are more likely to get depressed and also an anti-social person.” Because Consumerism is robbing our happiness.

Positive affirmations help train our mind to be happier: Focusing on the good all the time is what assists our mind in the whole cleansing process. The point is to not be tired. We have always been experts at stuffing our brains with innumerable thoughts – AND we still have to DO THE SAME. The significant difference is that instead of the negative, we train your mind to focus on the good thing

Obsession is for the weak and it is wasted: Honestly, obsessing about the little things is killing our brain cells. It is keeping our mental space preoccupied with unnecessary problems and expectations, training it to expect the worst out of it. Because with obsession comes fear. And with practice, this fear cuts deep.

Reacting too much is lethal: Sometimes our reactions are not under our control. But more often than not, how we respond to situations, people, words, etc. is very much in our own hands. When we react before thinking, our actions render a minimum. We are only ranting or complaining about everything happening wrong according to our criteria. What we lack is action. Focus on goals instead of complaining about the obstacles. Trust me; you will be better off!

Every once in awhile, scrub your mind by reviewing the cleansing process & keep a check on how you are doing & where you are lacking such that you may improve. To keep things neat & clean, it is important to cleanse on a daily basis and make it a habit.

Shouldn’t we declutter all these things and getting rid of all this junk. It will be ideal to do self-introspection this Diwali. Make this Diwali time to rectify our omission of work to be done and use it an excuse to clear the mind of regrets, hurt,  jealousy, bitterness, hate, and all negativities within that pull us down.
