The tools may be used in more ways and you can go to the links in the post to explore further. We are not going to talk about the most common software like Word, Excel, etc. These are some of the best in their class tools you must know for a successful career in IT. Anything specific to domain or industry may also be mentioned.
MS Project – for managing & reporting on projects. If used efficiently, it can ease your project management to a great degree. However, a lot of folks only use it for WBS and resource assignments without even comparing the baselines. On the other hand a lot of project managers, including some in big companies, still try to use MS Excel for project management.
JIRA – An excellent tool for tracking projects/issues that run in Agile methodology. Can be used for projects of all sizes and duration.
GITHub – Software Development and version control. You can collaborate with lots of folks and develop together seamlessly.
Selenium, LoadRunner, eggPlant – Selenium is used for automating the testing of web applications. LoadRunner is great for performance testing. Eggplant is the new age tool for automating testing using AI.
ALM – Single repository for project-related documentation. It also gives project planning features.
Anaconda – A platform for working with data science. Provides tools for code writing in an IDE kind of environment including for Python (Spyder), and R (RStudio).
XAMPP – PHP development environment. It includes Apache, Tomcat, Maria DB, Perl, PHP. An alternative to XAMPP is WAMP. WAMP stands for Windows, Apache, MySQL, PHP. While XAMPP is cross-platform, WAMP is for Windows only.
AWS & Google Cloud – For setting up your applications in the cloud. These can result in enormous savings, professional-level service to your customers with the least headaches for you, and your workforce can focus on what matters the most. Less costly to set up and you can pay per use so you don’t have to invest mammoth initially and see the effects later. This is the way to go.
Firebase – faster mobile and web-apps development. Low code solution.
Visio – to create flowcharts, process diagrams, org charts, etc. Please do not use PowerPoint or Excel or Word to make such diagrams. Those look simply bad in comparison.
Eclipse – Awesome IDE for writing code.
Atom – Most versatile text editor
