We all know Chameleon to be clever and someone who molds them accordingly to the situation very often. So, the question arises is it bad to be a Social Chameleon?
There is a two perspective to this situation, first, it is good that you are friendly with others and it is advantageous sometimes if you mold yourself according to people you are spending time with without being fearful in expressing your thoughts and experience.
Second is to make people like you. In this situation you pretend to be someone, which you are completely opposite of. So, if you find yourself morphing to fit your social surroundings, you’re probably afraid others won’t like you if you’re different this makes you social chameleons. In this article we will discuss about the later one.
Signs that you are a social chameleon
If you are a social chameleon, identify and try to change:
You lie to impress
If you think your truth will not be appreciated by others, you try to mask your originality and prefer to lie blatantly. Common in cases, when you try to impress somebody.
You are Apologetic for everything
Like you say, I listen to BTS ….ya I know it is very stupid. Why are you ashamed of these little things. You are always worried that the person is judging you or will make fun of you. Just don’t pretend to be someone who you are NOT, even people understand who is pretending and who are the real ones. Friends that you make by pretending will never be the real ones.
They say, “Oh, I love Billie Eillish.”
And you say, “OMG, I love her too!” Even though you don’t.
You forget that the ones who really love you just want YOU, not some copycat version of you.
You withdraw yourself from social situations
It’s not that an introvert will always withdraw from social situations, sometimes extroverts fear something about them and avoid social situations, they are too busy worrying what others will think.
We have to overcome the fear of rejection that comes with worrying that others won’t like us when we’re being ourselves.
You don’t want to show your quirks
You’re a fan of bright colorful and blingy clothes, maybe you are into heels but you wear baggy and plainclothes and sneakers, just because people you hang out with have those preferences.
If you’re too afraid of what others will think, you’ll feel pressured to follow the crowd, even if it means selling yourself out. Doing so activates stress responses that are harmful to your body. But it also keeps others from recognizing the unique quirks that connect us. You just never know when you’ll run into another person who appreciates you and have the same fashion liking as yours if you’re brave enough to be all you, all the time.
You’re constantly wondering what the other person is thinking.
If you’re so busy trying to read someone else’s mind to make sure who you’re being and what you’re saying is landing right, you’re not really present in this moment. And you’re certainly not paying attention to the beautiful, unique soul who is giving you the gift of his or her presence. In this scenario it is bad to be a Social Chameleon.
Remember If you try to be a social chameleon in situations that do not require you to be one, you will never be happy. After all that heaviness only you can feel.
So it becomes important to present people with the real you, what are your preferences. There are situations when you have to mold your personality according to the situations. But decide wisely when being a social chameleon will help you or not?
Sometimes you’re right. The price of authenticity is that you won’t comfortably fit in everywhere. But it’s worth the risk because only when you’re brave enough to be unapologetic will you truly find your people, Life is too short and precious so appreciates your beauty. and do not hide under the mask of someone else. It will get you infected by the disease of self-doubt.
One life. Live Boundless
