How to overcome ‘Stagnation’

Life is like a race, either you run or those behind you, will overtake you. Life is like a movement, either you move or be removed. If you do not move, that is called stagnation. In the journey of growth, there are times when we grow and excel – we are endlessly driven and hyped up, motivated to get our goals. Then there are times when we stagnate. We feel uninspired and unmotivated.

It is important for us to understand that feeling of stagnation is not stable. You have to move in life; it will start stinking if there is no movement; as the stagnant pond stinks.

Stagnation comes because there isn’t anything that excites you enough to take action. If you don’t have a habit of setting yourself to new goals and instead just leave yourself to daily mundane, it’s not surprising you are experiencing stagnation.

On the other hand, even if you are a  goal setter, there are times when the goals you set in the past lose their appeal is present. It’s normal and it happens to me too. The time and emotional state you were in when you set up that goal for yourself may differ from your present state of mind, your priorities change with time.

How do you know if you are stagnating;  Here are some signs:

  • If you are procrastinating on your goals.
  • If you don’t feel like doing anything.
  • If you keep sleeping, eating, surfing social media all day long.
  • If you know you have some target given to complete, yet you keep avoiding it.
  • If you have not achieved anything significant for people to praise your efforts.
  • If you have a habit of snoozing, you plan for your day but end up pressing the snooze button on your alarm clock. It is often said that “Behind every unrealized personal growth goal, lies an overworked snooze button”.

Ways to overcome your stagnancy:

Remember you aren’t the only one facing this phase of stagnancy.

Everyone stagnates at some point or another. You are not alone in this and more importantly, it’s normal. In fact, the phase of stagnancy hits everyone at some point in their lives; you feel that the results of your efforts aren’t promising.

If you go to the gym daily and work out religiously, taking proper diet but still not able to lose that one inch to give you your perfect look, for which you desired so long. This may bring you to a point wherein you don’t want to put more of those extra efforts anymore.

Realizing you are not alone in this will make it much easier to deal with this period. By trying to fight it you’re only fighting yourself. Accept this situation, acknowledge it, and tell yourself it’s okay. That way, you can then focus on the constructive steps that will really help you.

Do what you like :

The unfortunate reality is you have to work to survive. When you feel what you did previously is not fulfilling, leave it. Instead, start anything you like; you can be a freelancer sketch artist, you can be a cook, anything that s makes you happy.

Take Risks:

Do something that challenges you at work. If you feel that you have spent your previous years comfortably; it means you haven’t grown.  Take risks, try and overcome what challenges you; can give you; by this, you may look forward to every morning enthusiastically.

It is important to take Breaks:

When’s the last time you took a real break for yourself. Breaks are important to rejuvenate your body’s mind and soul.

Perhaps it’s time to take a time-out. Prolonged working can cause someone to become disillusioned as they lose sight of who they are and what they want to be. Go take some extended leave from work. A few days at the bare minimum; a few weeks or months will be great.

Go on a trip elsewhere and get away from your work and your life. Use this chance to get a renewed perspective on life. Think about your life purpose, what you want, and what you want to create for your life in the future.

Change your routine and circle for a while:

We are humans and it is impossible for us to stick to a single routine all for life. Being in the same environment, doing the same things over and over again, and meeting the same people can make us stagnant.

Also kind of people you hang around with makes a huge impact on your mood. If people around you are of mundane thoughts; that is an alarming sign for you to change your circle.

Build connections with people who inspire you with their work, personality.

The homogeneity is not always good.

When you are in a state of stagnancy(stagnation) Find out your thoughts and actions of what’s making you stagnate. Sometimes it’s the environment you are in, sometimes it’s the people you been hanging out with, sometimes it’s your lifestyle. Most of the time it’s a combination of all these. Changing them up helps to stir you out of the stagnant mode.

As quoted by John Mason Good ”Happiness consists of activity. It is a running stream, not a stagnant pool”.
